| Fort Hamilton This fort, built to protect Hamilton Harbour, has panoramic views. A peaceful place with well-tended lawns, a garden moat, dungeons, and never-used, 18-tonne artillery pieces relocated here from Fort Langton. Fort St. Catherine Governor Richard Moore had this fort built to defend Gate's Bay, the landing place of the Sea Venture. However, never was a shot fired in anger. The fort is now open to the public and displays replicas of the Crown Jewels of England.Hamilton Parish Hamilton Parish surrounds most of Harrington Sound. The biggest attraction here is the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo at Flatts Inlet. Built in 1926, it's one of the oldest continuously operating aquariums in the New World and features an intriguing look at the wildlife of Bermuda and other islands. You can also visit the Bermuda Railway Museum, the Bermuda Perfumery and Gardens, the Crystal Caves of Bermuda Hamilton City Hall & Arts Centre This handsome revivalist building, designed by celebrated Bermudian architect Wil Onions, was completed in 1960. Topping off the 91-foot tower is a bronze replica of the Sea Venture. Inside are the Bermuda National Gallery, Society for Arts Gallery, City Hall Theatre, and the offices of the Corporation of Hamilton. Royal Naval Dockyard Built by slave and convict labour, the Dockyard became a strategic outpost for the Royal Navy. In 1869, the worlds largest floating dry dock was installed here. Thanks to an imaginative redevelopment programme, many of the historic old naval buildings have been converted into restaurants with character, shops with Victorian elegance, and arts and crafts workshops. The flagships are undoubtedly the Clocktower Centre, and the Bermuda Maritime Museum, set in the body of the fort. It is easy to explore all the Dockyard attractions on foot.South Shore Park This coastal reserve protects some of Bermuda's finest beaches. St GeorgeUNESCO World Heritage Site. The Town of St George, founded in 1612, is an outstanding example of the earliest English urban settlement in the New World. Its associated fortifications graphically illustrate the development of English military engineering from the 17th to the 20th century, being adapted to take account of the development of artillery over this period. |
St. Peter's Church St Peter's Church, in the Town of St George's, is the oldest continually-used Anglican Church in the Western Hemisphere. The original church built on the site in 1612 was constructed of wood with a palmeto thatch roof. A stone structure replaced it in 1619. The present church was built in 1713. The tower was added in 1814. The church walls are adorned with memorials to notable St Georgians of the past. |
