Guana, Guana Island
An oasis of privacy in a natural setting
From US$695 per night, All Inclusive plan, tax to be added. Travel dates: until August 31, 2013
|
This 850 acre tropical island, one of the largest of the British Virgin Islands is home to an upscale resort which is one of the most private hideaways in the Caribbean. Guana island is an oasis of privacy in a natural setting where you can savor excellent gourmet food and wine, spa cuisine if desired, with excellent personal service.
Guana is a secluded, romantic virgin island of the British Virgin Islands -- a hideaway nature preserve and wildlife sanctuary where indigenous flora and fauna are protected.
|
The escapist kind. In which a character knows someone who owns a private island in the Caribbean where a small group gathers and the plot unfolds. Guana doesn't have bus tours, public restaurants, or glitz of any kind. It does have excellent accommodations, fine service, wonderful food, acres of privacy per guest, year-round temperatures in the seventies and eighties, and a choice of oceans. This makes good reading, they admit. But, as you're about to discover, it's even better when it's real.
With the splendor of nature taking people's breath away at every turn, they use restraint indoors. The interiors are comfortably but not overwhelmingly furnished in a style that comes out of the history of Guana Island, which was once a sugar cane plantation owned by American Quakers.

North Beach Villa
An intimate, private hide-away at the edge of Guana's vast North Beach is reached by a trail through lush foliage. The cottage, hidden in tropical woodland, sits almost at waters edge. It is the only cottage on the beach. A trail to the house winds almost half a mile past a salt-water flamingo pond, Quaker ruins, and through coconut, papaya, and sea-grape trees.
|
Living quarters are on the upper level of the cottage which is designed for views from every indoor area. Large windows and sliding doors in each room face the ocean or tropical foliage. The interior features comfortable furniture in soft Caribbean colors. Outside, both open and covered decks overlook North Beach and the Bay.
The bedroom has views of sunrises and the ocean as well as glass doors leading to a terrace with rattan furnishings.
|
A winding boardwalk leads to an oceanside deck with steps to a swimming area cleared of rocks. The deck is perfect for sunning and watching sea birds that habit these shores. Guests of the North Beach Cottage have a sunning deck and oceanside pool just steps from the beach.

Sea View Cottages
Rooms at Guana Island are in cottages scattered along a high saddle-back ridge dividing two mountain peaks. They are named after Caribbean islands - Anegada, Barbados, Camanoe, and Dominica (the main house), Eleuthera, Fallen Jerusalem, and Grenada. Some of the cottages contain several rooms, each with a separate entry. One has a living room which can be used if all three bedrooms are rented by a family or group.
|
The main house, called Dominica, holds the dining verandahs, lounge/bar, living room, and cozy library. The living room is a wonderful afternoon retreat to browse books, listen to the stereo, and enjoy the view and breeze coming off White Bay. The self-serve bar is fully equipped with cocktail mixes, liquors of all kinds and flavors, a refrigerator full of beer, wine, and sodas. It's a fun place to sit and chat when someone offers to be bartender. The big house also holds the manager's office and three guest rooms which overlook White Bay and the island of Tortola.
|
Some of the rooms have private sun patios or porches; others have covered verandahs.
You might wonder which is the "best room"? They are ALL nice.
Each, of course, has a different spectacular view of the island and vistas. Some cottages are on a hillside. One perches above sunset terrace and has a split level floor plan containing a bedroom and sitting area with a day bed. A large covered porch with two comfortable wicker chairs extends across the front of the cottage. A winding path leads upward to more cottages. One has three spacious bedrooms surrounding a lovely terrace with a wonderful view of Muskmelon Bay and Long Man's Point. Notice that Guana has thoughtfully provided a rocker - a delightful addition to most porches.
All the rooms have a desk, chair, and chest of drawers plus patio lounge chairs on the deck or patios. Beds have reading lamps on either side and plenty of fluffy pillows.
Guests will find Guana Island's rooms comfortable and a perfect way to spend your vacation surrounded by bright sunrises, gorgeous sunsets and relaxing vistas.

Amenities and facilities

Dining
The dining terrace overlooks both the Atlantic and the Caribbean. Mingling is optional. But not required. At cocktail time, guests gather on Sunset Terrace hoping to see the Green Flash -- a blink of iridescent chartreuse at the moment sun meets sea that is somehow not visible to everyone. Then comes dinner -- the freshest seafood, Island-grown fruits and vegetables, breads and muffins from their own oven -- all served on china and crystal by a staff as cheerful as candlelight. And then comes the rest of the star-filled night.
Beach
White Bay Beach is the powder-white stretch of glimmering coral sand that most of the guests use every day. And since they never number more than thirty, it's hard to imagine anyone thinking it crowded. They do, however, understand that there are times when people want to be alone. Really alone. Fortunately, they have six more beaches on the Island, some so secluded they're accessible only by boat, on any of which they can arrange a very private picnic.
Nature
A real wildlife sanctuary. With an official designation and more flora and fauna than any island its size in the Caribbean, maybe even the world. In fact, they've published a special guide for the many naturalists who come from as far away as China to explore the mountain trails. Most guests, however, prefer to observe it all from a distance on a chaise, with a pina colada as a study aid. Like everything else on the Island, how you make use of the natural wonders is entirely up to you.
Amenities and activities
Included: the use of two excellent tennis courts, small sailboats, kayaks, pedal boats, windsurfers, snorkeling, hiking, croquet, ping pong, beach and fishing equipment, WiFi Internet service.
At additional charge: massage, water skiing, fishing trips, sunset cruises, castaway picnics, tennis pro, guided hikes, scuba diving and instruction, deep sea fishing, sail or motor boat charters and boat trips to other islands.
